At the front.
Am sure if you love old stuff you also love old photos and postcards, this is a handpainted photograph of Miss Kathleen Vincent and I got a little surprise on the back....
The writer describes going to Huddersfield (England), this is where my Grandmother was born. When I kept reading "her brother is out at the front...." it hit me just how many of these correspondences must have been circulating, queries about loved ones, not knowing for many months or even years if men and women in your life were alive or not. When I was younger my grandmother told me amazing stories about running for the bomb shelter, what they ate during time of rations....I'm hoping to scan a box full of photos from my grandmother that I have never seen before as I just found out a relative has them in New Zealand....can't wait to go through them, RIP Lilian Ivy.

That gave me a bit of a chill! Wonderful find, and what beautiful handwriting.
ReplyDeleteMy eyes went straight to Huddersfield. An old lover of mine was from there. Backpackers romance. Lasted 6 months some how? My nana and grandad's house in Wellington still had a bomb sheltar in the backyard when i was little.
