Vintage re-makes.
I always thought the movie re-make was a modern phenomenon but apparently not. While sick this New Years Eve I watched the fabulous (and fitting) 1941 movie "The Lady Eve" (Eve is my Mum's name too). Such a great movie starring Barbara Stanwyck and Henry Fonda, Stanwyck is a card shark scammer along with her father and the movie leads the characters through various deceptions...I don't want to give it away! Turns out in 1956 they decided to re-make this movie and titled it The Birds and The Bees starring Mitzi Gaynor (of the smallest waist....). As is usually the case I enjoyed the 1941 version more but maybe only because I had a case of the "seen this's".....the clothing is super fabulous in both films and Stanwyck is a super cool character, hilarious, dry and very very smart.....more so than Gaynor who falls a little flat in comparison...but we shouldn't compare! Would love your thoughts if you have seen either film, enjoy and happy new year to you!
*both movies are watch instantly on Netflix, images taken directly from the films.
This is my favourite dress in the original film below, it has a bare midriff and fitted bodice....completely beautiful!

Oh, I haven't seen either version - must look them up! You are right, that open midriff dress is to DIE for...

I hope you're starting to feel better Amy!
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen either of these movies either. Love the midriff and wowzers! Those are some big pink puffy sleeves!
I can't believe a bare midriff then!

I'm having a giveaway...
Yeah, I can't imagine Mitzi being able to hold a candle to Barbara, poor thing! I need to see The Lady Eve again.
ReplyDeleteWeird side note, I sold a blouse awhile back that was designed by Edith Head and sold through magazines as a promo for The Birds and the Bees! Of course, I didn't find out about the connection to the movie until after the fact.
I loved both movies. Some of the story line changed a bit from each movie, so some of the plot I liked in one and some of the plot I liked in the other. But, I loved the clothes from the Birds and Bees best of all! I mentioned a link to this post on my blog, great vintage movies and the costumes were fantastic!
ReplyDeleteI noticed this recently as well with The Philadelphia Story (K. Hepburn & Cary Grant) and High Society (Grace Kelly and Bing Crosby!)
